Christ the King International School (CTKIS); founded with the motto "That all may be one"; was born on 31" January, 1956 with six pupils. This was in response to the needs of many catholic expatriates working with the various embassies & international institutions. The then Accra Catholic Diocese through Father Leslie Hatfield (SVD) ; who was then the General Manager of Catholic Schools, tasked the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS) with the building and administration of the Christ The King International School. Barely three month later, the number of pupils had risen to thirteen, creating a need for permanent classrooms. Subsequently, three extra classrooms were completed and inaugurated on 28" October, 1956. By 1957, the number of pupils had doubled in the region of fifties; majority coming from other countries.
In January, 1960 Father Anthony Bauer was transferred to take over the administration of the CTKIS and Sister Francetta Kunkel (SSpS) was made responsible for the growth, general welfare and development of the school. In February 1961, Sister Francetta and her team ensured CTKIS opened its doors to a fully furnished kindergarten; filled with children of various nationalities. It is quite interesting to note that the first set of Common Entrance Examination pupils; numbering seven who undertook the exams in 1961, all came out with flying colours!
After Sister Francetta was reassigned to St.Theresa's School, North Kaneshie. Sister Lauretta (SSpS) over. She was in turn followed by Sisters Virginalis (SSpS), Godfreda (SSpS) and Gerard (SSpS), all working assiduously to the further develop the school. During the tenure of Father Harold Lauck (SVD) as parish priest the Sisters had relocated to the front part of CTKIS. A school uniform; yellow in colour, was introduced by Sister Godfreda.
In 1970, Sister Bernharda Prokesch later called Sister Maria (her baptismal name), was appointed to take charge of the school. During her tenure the school uniform was change to the maroon and white being used now. Rev. Father Maurice Lesage (SVD), a retired Biology teacher from Achimota School was the parish priest during her era. Sister Mary Laureen Lahnai became headmistress of CTKIS in 1977 with Mrs. Patricia Quaidoo appointed as her assistant. Rev. Father Amos Fredericks (SVD), a retired Headmaster of Pope John's Secondary School, was the parish priest during their era and he was later replaced by Rev. Father Martin Wels (SVD). Sister Mary Zwerina (SSpS) then took charge of the running of CTKIS followed by Mrs. Patricia Quaidoo in 1998. During the era of Sister Mary Laureen and Mrs. Patricia Quaidoo, the duo did well in helping to build the CTK hall by getting parents to annually hand out Harvest donations towards its establishment. Rev. Father Stephen Adu-Kwaning was the Parish priest during this period and he did his utmost best to support.
The Sisters of the Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer (HDR) subsequently took over the administration of the school. Sister Vincentia Mensah was the first HDR appointed as the headmistress in 2008 with Father Prince Adelaayitar as the parish priest. In 2009, when Father Prince went for further studies, Rev. Father Andrew Campbell took over as parish priest. In 2012, Sister Jesse Quist was the next HDR in whose hands the school was entrusted. She handed over to Mrs. Veronica Laryea in 2016. Over the past 60+ years CTKIS has produced intelligent, innovative and smart graduates in various fields ranging from the Arts to the Business, Science and Environment, Health, Government, Public Services, Religion etc. It is therefore not surprising to say that so many former products of the school are controlling high positions in various institutions and contributing immensely to the development of our various industries in Ghana, Sub-Saharan Africa & in fact the entire world. Currently, CTKIS is headed by Mrs. Portia Felice Mensah as Headmistress with Rev. Fr. Dr. Ebenezer Akesseh as Parish Priest and Local Manager.
